Project Gutenberg

A useful starting point for older novels, short stories and other literary works. Book pages offer several reading and download options; choose EPUB or plain text for DocsToAudio rather than a Kindle-only file.

How to download
Open a book page, find “Download for free”, and choose EPUB or Plain Text. PDF is not a standard option on the example page.
Before listening
Check the contents and introductory material before narration. In our TXT test, the file included source information, a contents list and the book text; we selected only two opening paragraphs.
Rights & region
The example is listed as public domain in the USA. If you are in the UK or Europe, check the status of the specific work and edition where you live.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

A plain-text classic, starting with the opening two paragraphs.

Down the Rabbit-Hole

112 words · Aria · English (US) · Normal speed

Lewis Carroll · AI narration

Read the sample transcript

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice “without pictures or conversations?”

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

What we actually tested
Input
Gutenberg eBook #11 · TXT · 49 detected sections.
Preparation
Selected two opening body paragraphs and joined wrapped lines. Left the contents, heading and source notices out of narration.
Import notes
TXT is easy to review, but the import includes non-story material. Select the story text before generating audio.

A second edition of Alice, this time downloaded as EPUB and sampled from a different chapter.

VII: A Mad Tea-Party

121 words · Aria · English (US) · Normal speed

Lewis Carroll · AI narration

Read the sample transcript

There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it: a Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the other two were using it as a cushion, resting their elbows on it, and talking over its head. “Very uncomfortable for the Dormouse,” thought Alice; “only, as it’s asleep, I suppose it doesn’t mind.” The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it: “No room! No room!” they cried out when they saw Alice coming. “There’s plenty of room!” said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large armchair at one end of the table.

What we actually tested
Input
Standard Ebooks EPUB · 18 detected sections.
Preparation
Selected the first two paragraphs of chapter VII, excluding the chapter heading. The EPUB parser returns continuous text; reviewed punctuation before narration.
Import notes
The chapter title was preserved, but the import also included the imprint, colophon and uncopyright notice. EPUB still needs a chapter review.

1.1: What Is Psychology?

101 words · Aria · English (US) · Normal speed

AI narration

Read the sample transcript

Psyche comes to represent the human soul’s triumph over the misfortunes of life in the pursuit of true happiness (Bulfinch, 1855); in fact, the Greek word psyche means soul, and it is often represented as a butterfly. The word psychology was coined at a time when the concepts of soul and mind were not as clearly distinguished (Green, 2001). The root ology denotes scientific study of, and psychology refers to the scientific study of the mind. Since science studies only observable phenomena and the mind is not directly observable, we expand this definition to the scientific study of mind and behavior.

In our increasingly technological and internationalized workplaces, communications skills are among the most sought-after competencies employers require of job candidates. Every job posting you see will almost certainly ask for candidates with excellent communications skills and the ability to work effectively in teams. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written, verbal, visual, and interpersonal contexts is vital for success and advancement in the workplace. No matter how brilliant or innovative an idea may be, if it is not communicated clearly and promoted effectively to the right audience, it will not become a reality.

Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking

A prose introduction to a logic textbook discovered through the Open Textbook Library.

Preface

74 words · Aria · English (US) · Normal speed

AI narration

Read the sample transcript

This is an introductory textbook in logic and critical thinking. The goal of the textbook is to provide the reader with a set of tools and skills that will enable them to identify and evaluate arguments. The book is intended for an introductory course that covers both formal and informal logic. As such, it is not a formal logic textbook, but is closer to what one would find marketed as a “critical thinking textbook.”

What we actually tested
Input
Version 1.4 PDF · 242 pages · 17 detected sections. The tested file came from the eCampusOntario repository mirror.
Preparation
Selected the first four sentences of the preface (printed page i). Removed the page header and number; kept the author’s wording.
Import notes
This PDF did not yield chapter bookmarks. The parser used 15-page groups, so the preface had to be located inside “Pages 1–15” rather than selected by its title.

What Works in Conservation: 2020

Introduction

AI narration

Read the sample transcript

This book has been created to help you make decisions about practical conservation management by providing an assessment, from the available scientific evidence, of what works and what does not work in conservation. It also tells you if no evidence has been found about whether or not a conservation intervention is effective. This is the 2020 edition of What Works in Conservation, which was first published in 2015 and is updated annually.

What we actually tested
Input
OBP Introduction chapter PDF · 10 file pages, including cover and credits · 1 detected section.
Preparation
Selected the opening body paragraph on file page 3 (printed page 1). Left out the cover, copyright page and following heading. Removed a space before a comma introduced by PDF extraction.
Import notes
The chapter download is much smaller than the whole book. It imported as one section, so front matter still needed to be excluded manually.

02 / FROM DOWNLOAD TO AUDIO

How to Convert an eBook or PDF into Audio

  1. Download a supported file

Choose PDF, EPUB, DOCX or TXT. If a book offers several versions, start with EPUB for flowing prose or TXT for a simple text-only edition. Check its license and local availability.

  2. Upload it to DocsToAudio

Open the PDF to MP3 converter and upload your file. Review the detected sections before continuing.

  3. Choose what you want to hear

Select the relevant chapters or pages. Exclude contents lists, source notices and other material you do not want narrated. Start with a short section for an unfamiliar file.

  4. Review the text and choose a voice

Check reading order, headers, footnotes and unusual symbols. Choose a voice and speed that suit the document. Standard voices are free; Premium voices use credits.

  5. Convert and download

Export MP3 for broad player compatibility, or M4B for a single audiobook file with chapter marks. Listen to a short section before converting more.

A note about PDFs

Scanned pages may need OCR first. Tables, formulas and multi-column layouts may not produce a natural reading order. Review the extracted text rather than assuming every PDF is ready to narrate.

03 / GOOD TO KNOW

eBook Download & Conversion Questions

Where can I download free eBooks and PDF books?

Start with Project Gutenberg or Standard Ebooks for classics, OpenStax or BCcampus for textbooks, the Open Textbook Library for course discovery, and Open Book Publishers for academic books. This guide links one downloadable example and one actual audio case for each source.

Should I choose EPUB or PDF for listening?

When the same book is available in both formats, EPUB is often a useful starting point for flowing text and chapter navigation. PDF is useful for reports and textbooks, but columns, page furniture and formulas can require extra review. Check the extracted text either way.

Can DocsToAudio read scanned PDFs?

A scanned page may contain an image rather than selectable text. Such a file may need OCR before audio conversion. Check whether you can select and copy the text, and review the upload result before proceeding.

Can I convert these books for free?

DocsToAudio offers free Standard voices. Premium voices use credits. The excerpts on this page use a Standard voice; see the pricing page for current plan details. See pricing.

Can I share the audiobook I create?

Free access to a file does not automatically grant permission to publish an audio version. Check the specific work, edition, license and your country’s copyright rules. This is particularly relevant when using U.S. public-domain collections from the UK or Europe.
